Who it helps

What Perinatal Therapy Can Help With

Becoming a parent can bring joy along with exhaustion, fear and feelings you didn't expect. About 1 in 5 new mothers experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, and many partners struggle too. You don't have to wait until it feels unbearable to get support.

We help new and expecting parents with:

  • Postpartum depression
  • Anxiety during pregnancy or after birth
  • Intrusive thoughts after birth
  • Birth trauma
  • Pregnancy loss and infertility grief
  • The identity shift into parenthood
  • Relationship strain after a baby
  • Feeling overwhelmed or disconnected

How we help

Your therapist helps you make sense of what you're feeling without judgment, and works with you on both immediate relief and the deeper changes that come with becoming a parent. Telehealth makes it easier to fit sessions around feedings, naps and recovery.

Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly, in person at our Newport Beach office or by telehealth anywhere in California.

If you're having thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call or text 988, or the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262.

Questions

Postpartum Therapy FAQ

Is it postpartum depression or the baby blues?

Baby blues usually fade within two weeks of birth. If sadness, anxiety, irritability or feeling disconnected lasts longer or gets worse, it may be postpartum depression or anxiety, and it's worth talking to a therapist.

Do you work with partners and fathers?

Yes. Partners can experience perinatal depression and anxiety too, and we also see couples adjusting to life with a new baby.

Do you help with pregnancy loss?

Yes. We support people through miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility and other reproductive losses.

Do you offer postpartum therapy online?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth sessions anywhere in California, and some clients mix in-person and online sessions.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out-of-network practice. That lets us keep caseloads manageable, protect your privacy and keep insurance companies out of decisions about your care. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, we can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement.
